We got there in the end. A month or so in a daze. Not long when I look back, but at the time it seemed endless. We left halfway through for two days to go to Berlin and do our first live performance as HURTS. Three songs at a fashion event. It was weird but it meant we finally existed in the real world. That was something. Our first proper gig at St Philip’s church in Salford was still about a month away. Back to Gothenburg and it finally started to come together. We recorded some Swedish gospel singers on STAY and got a drummer in for UNSPOKEN and BETTER THAN LOVE. I did vocals and Adam recorded the majority of his guitar parts. We also finished the song HAPPINESS, a later B-side. I think you can hear a bit of our crazed mental state in the production on that one. The rest of the album had been done remotely or finished at our studio in Manchester. Most crucially though, it was in Pellerin that we wrote THE WATER. Late one night, lost and at the end of our tether, we sat and tried to write something new. Just how we’d done in the beginning. It came almost instantly, no resistance. A final outpouring of emotion right at the finish line. It’s one of my favourite songs we’ve ever written. And that was that. We’d done it. I remember getting back to Manchester and bursting into tears over my dinner. It had been a hell of a ride up to this point. Jonas was on his last legs too. The integrity, beauty and vision that he brought to the album is something I’m forever grateful for. Without him there is no HAPPINESS. It felt like we were all just hitting our stride at the same time. Spiritual warriors!
