This course is focused on devirtualization and deobfuscation, aiming to teach students how to deal with industry-standard obfuscation techniques found in protection systems such as VMProtect, Themida, Denuvo, EAC, and so on. We’ll be guiding you from the ground up from writing your first simple deobfuscation passes, all the way to devirtualizing a real commercial VM commonly used in anti-cheat, copy protection, and malware.
The course will be divided into 3 modules, each containing approximately 10 chapters:
Module 1 - “DEVIRT100” lays the foundation for the entire course. It is a crash course in the compiler theory concepts that apply directly to deobfuscation and analysis of binary programs. In this module, you will learn how compiler middle-end is the driving engine for automated binary analysis. The module focuses on teaching you how to write program analysis and optimization algorithms, starting with fundamental concepts such as control flow analysis, dead code elimination, and constant propagation. It progresses into more advanced analyses, such as memory alias analysis. By the end, you will have a solid foundation that will allow you to begin writing custom passes for any obfuscator.
Module 2 - “DEVIRT200” builds on the previous module by taking compiler concepts and applying them to a real commercial obfuscator. You will apply what you’ve learned to real commercial-grade protection, in order to statically unpack and deobfuscate a protection VM in a target binary.
Module 3 - “DEVIRT300” is the pinnacle of the course, culminating all previous work into the final task of devirtualizing a real, commcercial-grade VM. In Module 2, you learned to unpack and deobfuscate the VM. Now, you’ll learn to analyze the VM itself, exploring different devirtualization strategies and tradeoffs.
