Released on this week in 2007, FUNK THIS marked a major return for Chaka.
The album debuted at No. 15 on the Billboard 200 and No. 5 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, making it Chaka’s highest-charting album since I FEEL FOR YOU more than two decades earlier.
FUNK THIS reunited Chaka with some familiar names and introduced some new combinations, including “Disrespectful” with Mary J. Blige, “You Belong to Me” with Michael McDonald, and a guest appearance from former Rufus bandmate Tony Maiden. The album also found Chaka putting her own stamp on songs by Prince, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, and others.
At the 2008 GRAMMYS, FUNK THIS won Best R&B Album, while “Disrespectful” earned Chaka and Mary J. Blige the GRAMMY for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
