Description
A guy on an electric scooter rides past two cops in East Tampa with an AR-15 slung across his back — and nothing happens.
No stop.
No arrest.
No dramatic police takedown.
Just a man exercising open carry in broad daylight while the cops keep moving.
And I’ll be honest: my first reaction was probably the same as yours.
It looks ridiculous.
A dude doing 15 miles an hour on an e-scooter with a rifle on his back is a little goofy.
But once you get past the visual, the real question is a lot more interesting:
At what point does open carry go from “I get it” to “okay, now this is too much”?
And who gets to draw that line?
Because if open carry is legal, then carrying the most capable firearm you own actually makes sense on paper.
A handgun is a compromise.
It is the gun you carry because you have to hide it.
But if you knew you were about to get into a gunfight, you would not reach for the smallest pistol in your waistband.
You would grab a rifle.
That does not mean I’m riding around with an AR on my back.
For my life, the attention and hassle are not worth it.
But that is my math.
It may not be his.
And if that scooter is his vehicle, then his rifle on his back is not that different from the rifle I keep in my vehicle — mine is just hidden behind sheet metal and tinted windows.
Now, does this kind of thing help gun rights or hurt us?
That is the part I’m genuinely torn on.
Because yes, it can scare fence-sitters.
It can make regular people uncomfortable.
It can look like a stunt.
But the only reason it looks so strange is because people are not used to seeing it.
Normal is just weird that happened enough times.
Florida open carry is new, and everybody’s eyeballs are still adjusting.
So I want to hear from you:
Is this guy making gun owners look crazy?
Or is it as simple as this:
That’s his ride.
That’s his right.
Let the man carry his rifle.
