Description
After months of preparation, Arabella is finally where we've been working all winter to reach: Newfoundland's remote south coast.
In this episode, we continue east from Burgeo, sailing into a coastline where roads disappear, tiny communities cling to the shoreline, and towering fjords stretch deep into the wilderness. Along the way, a mysterious lobster pot creates an unexpected navigation puzzle, an outboard motor demands some dockside troubleshooting, and we arrive at Grey River—one of the most spectacular fjords on Newfoundland's south coast.
From learning about protected salmon rivers to scrambling above waterfalls and making last-minute changes to our plans, this marks the true beginning of our summer expedition into one of Canada's most remote cruising grounds.
The farther east we travel, the wilder it gets. The Nuddick will not disappoint.

Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.
