Kayak fishing with live shrimp in Southwest Florida turned into one of those mornings where everything lined up. This is an uncut, real-time fishing session filmed in Nokomis, Florida in an area locals call “Snook Alley,” about a mile from the North Venice Jetty. Being this close to a major inlet, the water stays clear and full of life—especially this time of year when mangrove snapper fishing really starts heating up inshore.

I started the morning fishing docks with live shrimp and steady action right from the beginning. As the trip progressed, I moved over to a nearby mangrove island where the bite continued with a mix of mangrove snapper, snook, and redfish. The goal for this trip was to catch a Florida inshore limit of mangrove snapper (5 fish over 10 inches), and along the way I ended up catching around 20 snapper total, along with multiple snook and a couple of keeper redfish.
All of the fishing was done from my Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 kayak, which makes it easy to maneuver around docks and tight mangrove shorelines. I was using three similar setups throughout the trip—7 foot medium/heavy fast action rods paired with 4000 size spinning reels spooled with 20 lb braid. For targeting mangrove snapper, I used a 20 lb fluorocarbon leader with a #1 J-hook. The snook setup was stepped up to a 30 lb fluorocarbon leader with a 1/0 J-hook, and I also mixed in an artificial Thumper shrimp on a 20 lb leader.
This video is a condensed version of a 3.5 hour trip, edited down to about 1 hour and 45 minutes while still keeping the full uncut fishing experience. You’ll see nonstop bites early on, a slower stretch in the middle, and a strong finish to close things out.
