Father Teodor Stănescu was a Romanian Orthodox monk and former political prisoner, remembered as a witness of faith, suffering, and forgiveness. Arrested in 1948 for his involvement with the Orthodox youth group Frăţiile de Cruce, he was sentenced under the communist regime and endured nearly eight years of imprisonment in some of the most brutal prisons of the time, including Pitești, Gherla, Jilava, and Aiud. There he suffered torture and psychological “reeducation,” yet survived with his faith intact. After his release in 1957, instead of seeking revenge, he chose the path of forgiveness and repentance, dedicating his life to God and the memory of his fellow sufferers. In 2002 he embraced monasticism, becoming a monk and working tirelessly to honor the martyrs of communism, particularly through the memorial at Râpa Robilor in Aiud. Even into his old age he continued to write, speak, and give testimony, ensuring that future generations would not forget the trials of those who suffered for their beliefs. Father Teodor Stănescu passed away on May 13, 2019, after a long illness, departing this life confessed and communed, leaving behind the image of a man who turned suffering into witness, pain into faith, and injustice into forgiveness.
