For more than 50 years, Pia Cramling has been part of the chess world. She was a pioneer.
One of the strongest female players of her generation. A Grandmaster who never wanted to be “the best among women” — only the best, period. In this video, Pia looks back on her life in chess: from being the only woman in open tournaments, to questioning whether chess should remain her life,
to finding balance through family, love, and motherhood. She speaks about pressure, competition, and loneliness and about how chess can also be about joy, friendship, and happiness.
We also hear the story of the Cramling family: Pia, her husband Juan Manuel Bellón López, and their daughter Anna Cramling, who found her own path in chess through streaming and a new generation of fans.
This is not just a story about titles and tournaments. It’s a story about choice, identity, and what chess can truly mean.
