‘Everyone Loves Dance’ Dylan Mayoral NFT NYC Speech October 2021
In February 2021, I discovered NFTs. First in gaming, then art, then I thought, maybe Dance could work too. 8 months later, I was invited to represent the global Dance scene and speak at NFT NYC, the biggest NFT convention in the world, in New York. Not gonna lie, I was nervous, but this was bigger than me and I knew this was VERY important work.
The pandemic was a blessing in disguise, because it added more fuel to the fierce fire within me. I went from performing in an off broadway show with (in my opinion) the greatest choreographers of all time (Keone and Mari) to claiming monthly benefits in London desperately trying to shoot online tutorials and barely breaking even despite filming, editing, and promoting over 100 videos all by myself. I saw our industry and communities burn, ML closed, then Kinjaz Dojo, then Culture Shock, then KM and many many more, and that’s just me talking about California. I know it was a pandemic.. but here’s how I see it. I am an athlete. Dance is my art, Dance is my sport. I believe I am an elite Dancer. I believe I am in the top 1% of my sport and art form. I have been doing this for 18 years. I don’t think the top 1% of other sports struggled as much as the top 1% of Dancers. Again, I know.. It was a pandemic, many industries crumbled. But we deserve better.. Because what we do is amazing and EVERYONE LOVES DANCE. I realised how far behind we are as an art and sport and knew that we have serious work to do. Do you think they would let the largest basketball stadiums close? That’s what happened with Dancers. I believe NFTs are a big part of the answer. Discovering NFTs and selling my art on the blockchain has made me value myself as an artist and athlete ten-fold. I have realised so much this year and am VERY excited for the future. Thank you to all who support me on this journey, I will continue to work very hard for this culture and art form that I love more than anything, and am very excited for more Dancers to join me, see you in the Metaverse. 😎
