Do you remember when every mall had a piano store? I am looking back at why these shops vanished and what it means for music.
Walking past a mall today, the experience is completely different than it was decades ago. You used to find a bustling piano store or a showroom dedicated to the home organ right between the record shop and the local eateries. These spaces were community hubs where salesmen would play, and crowds would gather to listen. Now, those storefronts have largely disappeared from the landscape.
In this reflection, I examine the shifts in the piano industry that led to the decline of these iconic locations. It is a look at how mall culture changed and where those instruments and businesses ultimately went. As I navigate my own big professional change, I wanted to share my perspective on this era of music retail and why it matters to the future of the instrument.
