Last month I had the opportunity to attend a living history event with my kids. It took place on a historic battlefield in Oklahoma. It was my first time attending an event like this...so of course I made a costume! I used a set of twin sized sheets and McCalls 8184 for the top and self drafted the bottom (with a slit in the side to access my historical tie on pocket!). I did not want any visible machine sewing, so all the finishing work (including 7 buttonholes) were sewn by hand. Since the dress is intended to look like a working day dress I cut apart a skirt I made a few years back, but wasn't using, to make an apron.
Throughout the week leading up to the event I started digging into my family genealogy. I found a couple of photos of one of my ancestors who lived during the Civil War. It is her photo at the beginning of the video.
