Description
In November 1983, Mary Sheen, a reclusive woman living in Savannah, Georgia, died intestate, leaving behind a house filled with newspapers and $47,000 in cash hidden in a bank vault. When an inheritance search was published in Irish newspapers, rumors claimed her estate was worth millions, attracting hundreds of potential heirs. The legal battle eventually came down to the Hall family and the O’Regan family from County Cork, Ireland. Based on a mysterious letter known as “Uncle William,” the court awarded the approximately $80,000 inheritance to the Halls. Refusing to accept the decision, the O’Regans uncovered suspicious passport records, questionable property sales, and alleged obstacles in Savannah. Their fight led to court orders in Ireland and exhumations on both sides of the Atlantic. Although DNA tests failed to establish a match, the family continued to challenge the outcome, spending over $1 million on a bitter inheritance dispute that lasted more than 20 years.
