एक्टिविस्ट सोनम वांगचुक की पत्नी, डॉ. गीतांजलि आंग्मो कहती हैं, "मैं इस मामले को सही ढंग से सुलझाने के लिए दिल्ली हाई कोर्ट का शुक्रिया अदा करती हूँ। भारत में, एक लोकतांत्रिक नागरिक को अपनी पसंद का डॉक्टर, अस्पताल और इलाज चुनने का अधिकार है। यहाँ, उन्हें जिस तरह से लाया गया था, उसके कारण हमें भरोसा नहीं हो रहा था। उन्हें अस्पताल में भर्ती करने की ज़रूरत नहीं थी, क्योंकि उनकी सेहत की निगरानी जंतर-मंतर पर भी की जा सकती थी। यह एक तरह की नज़रबंदी जैसा था ताकि वह बाहर के लोगों से संपर्क न कर सकें। उनकी सेहत से जुड़ी बातें जानलेवा नहीं हैं। सरकार से ज़्यादा चिंता हमें उनकी सेहत की है। सोनम ने अपना अनशन जारी रखने का फ़ैसला किया है, ताकि वे उन छात्रों के साथ एकजुटता दिखा सकें जिनकी कल पिटाई हुई थी। सफ़दरजंग अस्पताल आए कई सांसदों को उनसे मिलने नहीं दिया गया। डॉ. लांबा और डॉ. दिघे, जो पिछले 20 दिनों से उनका इलाज कर रहे थे, ने आज कोर्ट को बताया कि इलाज करने वाले डॉक्टर को भी मरीज़ से मिलने नहीं दिया जा रहा था। हमें उस अस्पताल में नज़रबंदी और कैद जैसा महसूस हुआ। लंच के बाद, एक लिखित आदेश दिया जाएगा, फिर हम उन्हें मेदांता ले जाएँगे।"
Activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Dr Gitanjali Angmo, says, "I thank Delhi High Court for favourably disposing of this matter. In India, a democratic citizen has the right to choose his choice of doctor and hospital and treatment. Here, we had trust deficit because of the way he was brought here. His hospitalisation was not needed, as monitoring of his health could be done at Jantar Mantar. It was like a detention so that he cannot get in contact with people outside. His health parameters are not life-threatening. We are more worried about his health than the govt. Sonam has decided to continue his fast, showing solidarity with the students who were beaten yesterday. Many MPs who had come to Safdurjung Hospital were not allowed to meet him. Dr Lamba and Dr Dighe, who were treating him for the past 20 days, told the court today that even the doctor giving treatment was not being allowed to meet the patient. We felt detention and captivity in that hospital. After lunch, a written order will be given, then we will shift him to Medanta."
Activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Dr Gitanjali J Angmo, thanked the Delhi High Court after it permitted Wangchuk to be shifted from Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital, a private medical facility chosen by his family. The court considered medical reports from government doctors as well as Wangchuk’s personal and treating physicians before proposing the transfer. The Union government informed the court that it had no objection to the move.
Angmo said every democratic citizen has the right to choose their doctor, hospital and course of treatment. She claimed that the family had developed a “trust deficit” because of the manner in which Wangchuk was removed from the Jantar Mantar protest site and admitted to Safdarjung Hospital. According to her, continuous health monitoring could have been provided at the protest site and hospitalisation was not necessary.
She further alleged that the conditions at Safdarjung Hospital felt like “detention” because Wangchuk’s communication with people outside was allegedly restricted. Wangchuk had also complained through his lawyers about police surveillance, searches, seizure of devices and limited visitor access. The Delhi High Court observed that these concerns also required attention while considering his transfer.
Angmo maintained that Wangchuk’s health parameters were not immediately life-threatening and said the family was more concerned about his well-being than the government. During the court proceedings, her lawyers argued that his vital signs were stable and that monitoring could continue. A government doctor, however, pointed to low white blood cell levels and an increased risk of infection. Safdarjung Hospital had reported stable vital parameters but low blood sugar and potassium levels, with Wangchuk receiving oral rehydration and potassium supplements.
