🎸 ABOUT THE GRAPHICS
Your goal as a soloist is to create MELODY. Alpha Jams fretboard diagrams show notes you can use in REAL TIME, helping you connect scales, chords and melodic ideas.
THE THREE LAYERS
1. PENTATONIC
Your foundation for rock and blues improvisation. The blues scale adds a “blue note” to the pentatonic scale. Listen to how each note fits the current chord.
2. MODE
The seven-note scale layer adds two notes to the pentatonic framework shown here. Watch for changes as the harmony moves, and use these notes to explore more melodic colors.
3. CHORD
The chord layer shows the notes of the current harmony in real time. Play them together as chords or separately as arpeggios, or use them as targets in your solos.
Outgoing notes become smaller and fade out; incoming notes fade in so you can anticipate the changes. Listen as you play—the diagrams are a guide to exploring the harmony.
🎸 THE NOTE LABELS
The labels describe musical intervals relative to the root:
R = ROOT
The tonal reference point—the BIG BOSS.
m2 = MINOR 2ND
A tense, dark color one semitone above the root.
M2 = MAJOR 2ND
An open color often used as a ninth in chords.
m3 = MINOR 3RD
A defining note of minor chords and the minor pentatonic scale.
M3 = MAJOR 3RD
A defining note of major chords and an expressive contrast in blues.
P4 = PERFECT 4TH
Often heard as a suspended sound; its effect depends on the chord underneath.
D5 = DIMINISHED 5TH
The b5 “blue note”—a source of blues tension. 🤘
P5 = PERFECT 5TH
A strong supporting interval and the foundation of power chords.
m6 = MINOR 6TH
A dark, expressive color one semitone above the fifth.
M6 = MAJOR 6TH
The characteristic note that distinguishes Dorian from natural minor.
m7 = MINOR 7TH
Found in minor seventh and dominant seventh chords, and in the minor pentatonic scale.
M7 = MAJOR 7TH
A tense color one semitone below the root, found in major, harmonic minor and melodic minor scales.
In the Alpha Jams app, you can control the note labels, visible layers and how much of the fretboard you see.
