Free Crochet Poppy Granny Square pattern below.
Round 1. Using back yarn. Chain 4, slip stitch to join, work 8 single crochet in the circle, fasten off yarn.
Round 2. With red, slip the red to any stitch, chain 3, skip a stitch, slip stitch to the next, repeat till you have 4 x chain 3 loops.
Round 3. In each loop, work single crochet, half double crochet, 3 double crochet, half double crochet, single crochet, slip stitch to first single crochet to join, fasten off yarn.
Round 4. Fold the petal towards you, slip the red into the unused stitch in the black circle and make a chain of 5, slip stitch to the next unused stitch in the black circle, repeat to make 4 x chain 5 loops.
Round 5. In each loop, work a single crochet, half double crochet, 5 double crochet, half double crochet, single crochet. Slip stitch to join.
Sew in all tail ends now or you will struggle to sew in the tail ends due to the way the next bit works. Your crochet poppy will be complete.
Round 6. With dark green, slip stitch to the middle stitch of the outer petal in the middle stitch, chain 2, work 2 double crochet in the same space, chain 2 and work 3 more double crochet into the same space.
Now work 3 double crochet into the middle of the inner petal to form the side of the square, then work 3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet in the next outer petal to make the next corner. Repeat the sequence to form the square and slip stitch to the first double crochet to join.
Round 7. This round is worked like the normal granny square in black yarn to make the square, but you can use the join as you go method to build a blanket.
