Hidden in the black sand along its coastline are the world's largest known thorium reserves, with more than 800,000 tonnes believed to be buried there.

Thorium could offer an alternative to uranium, the fuel used in most nuclear power plants. The challenge is that countries are still trying to develop reactors that run efficiently on thorium.

As demand for nuclear power grows, some experts warn uranium supplies could come under pressure within the next 10 to 15 years.
