Could ADHD affect how long you live?

A new review of 19 studies shows a strong connection. People with ADHD had a 71% higher risk of early death than people without ADHD. While research like this can feel alarming, it doesn’t mean your outcome in life is set.

Researchers tie much of the increased risk to factors that people may be able to manage, like impulsivity, mental health, substance use, and trouble keeping up with health care.

One encouraging finding? Among people with ADHD, those who took medication had a 25% lower risk of early death. Only three studies looked at medication, though, so more research is needed. But it highlights something bigger: Early diagnosis and the right treatment matter.

The takeaway? ADHD is about more than focus. It’s tied to your long-term health, too.

Not sure where to start? Bring it up at your next health care visit. Ask how ADHD might be affecting your health and what could help.
