Former West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee has extended strong support to the ongoing Cockroach Janta Party protest over alleged examination irregularities, paper leaks and concerns surrounding the future of students and young job aspirants.
Speaking in Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee said that she would personally visit the CJP protest site if the situation required her presence. She maintained that the youth-led movement had received her party’s support from the beginning and would continue to receive it. Her statement signals stronger political backing for the protesters as opposition parties increase pressure on the Union government.
The CJP movement has primarily demanded accountability over alleged failures in the competitive-examination system and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Protesters argue that repeated paper leaks, cancelled examinations and uncertainty surrounding recruitment have damaged the confidence and career prospects of millions of young people.
The movement intensified after thousands of students and supporters attempted to march towards Parliament in New Delhi. The demonstration witnessed confrontations between protesters and Delhi Police, including the use of batons and tear gas. Injuries were reported among protesters and security personnel, while both sides presented conflicting accounts of how the violence began.
Mamata Banerjee’s statement adds to the growing support for the movement from opposition leaders. She said the protesters had the TMC’s backing from the outset and indicated that she was prepared to join them personally. Her intervention could give the youth agitation greater national political visibility and increase demands for dialogue between the government and student representatives.
The former West Bengal Chief Minister remains a prominent opposition figure and has recently called for greater unity among anti-BJP parties. Her remarks supporting the CJP protest come amid intensifying political confrontation between the ruling NDA and opposition parties over youth unemployment, education reforms and the handling of public demonstrations.
The CJP leadership has said that its sit-in protest will continue, although another march towards Parliament has been ruled out for now to prevent further injuries. The protesters continue to demand examination reforms, compensation for affected families and accountability from the Union government.
