City Folk explores the 20th-century revival of English Country Dance through the history of Pinewoods, a renowned dance camp in Massachusetts. Influenced by English folklorist Cecil Sharp and later energized by the mid-century folk revival, square dance and contra booms, and Jane Austen film adaptations, the tradition evolved across generations. Featuring rare archival footage, live performances, and interviews, the film captures a dance heritage that is both enduring and ever-changing.
Filmmaker Charles Weber made the film with producers Daniel Walkowitz and Stephanie Smith. The film draws on a book, City Folk, by Daniel Walkowitz (NYU Press).
