Review: While Cheetah Hunt (or, Cheetaka) was being built, it became one of the most hyped roller coasters ever. Florida was getting a ride similar to Maverick at Cedar Point, which is still considered one of the best coasters in the world today. The trains’ quick transitions were something people hadn’t really seen before, and they even surprised the ride’s manufacturer when it was first tested.
So when Busch Gardens Tampa Bay announced a custom version of this style of coaster in 2011, it felt like a huge deal for coaster fans. But when the ride opened, the reviews were mixed. Some people called it boring, said it felt more like a family coaster, and it didn’t belong in the same league as Maverick.
I feel it’s one of the most underrated coasters out there. The launches feel powerful, the “tree” element is still one of the most unique top-hat-style moments on any ride, and the trenches help make the coaster feel faster than it actually is. The water S-curves may not be as intense as Maverick’s elements, but they still offer some fun negative G-force moments, and the ride itself is very long.
