Description
Candy Cane Syndrome is a rare but increasingly recognised complication following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). It occurs when an excessively long blind afferent limb is left proximal to the gastrojejunostomy, creating a "candy cane" configuration where food preferentially enters and stagnates. This can lead to persistent upper gastrointestinal symptoms despite an otherwise technically successful bariatric procedure.
In this comprehensive educational lecture, Dr. R.K. Mishra explains the anatomy, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, prevention, and laparoscopic management of Candy Cane Syndrome. Learn why patients may develop chronic nausea, postprandial abdominal pain, vomiting, reflux, dysphagia, early satiety, regurgitation, and poor weight-loss outcomes, and how this condition can be differentiated from anastomotic stricture, marginal ulcer, internal hernia, and other postoperative complications.
The lecture highlights the role of upper gastrointestinal contrast studies, upper GI endoscopy, and CT imaging in diagnosis, as well as the principles of revisional laparoscopic surgery. Special emphasis is placed on preventing this complication through proper surgical technique and appropriate Roux limb construction during the initial gastric bypass.
This video is ideal for bariatric surgeons, general surgeons, gastroenterologists, residents, fellows, and healthcare professionals involved in the management of patients after bariatric surgery.
