"What Can I Do" is a prime example of the kind of sophisticated, arranged soul that defined the Chicago sound. Richard Evans, who handled the arrangements for many of these Cadet tracks, really knew how to build a track that had enough polish for radio but enough soul for the clubs. It's that quintessential sound that bridges the gap between traditional R&B and the emerging Northern Soul scene. Hearing this brings back memories of scouring record shops for these Cadet distributed releases. They always had a certain class to them, a certain professionalism in the production that just holds up. It's a wonderful, evocative piece of soul history.
