I have finished work on the final interaction in Chapter One of The Outer Islands: the hydrotherapy pump control room beneath Asylum Rock.
By this point, the player has crossed the docks, cargo areas, wards, greenhouses and Gondola Island. They have posed as a patient, upgraded their clearance to engineer and avoided the BOB maniple before finally reaching the colossal water reservoirs and Malin desalination spheres below the hospital.
The original puzzle required ten pressure-release switches to be thrown in the correct sequence. It worked—but was it fun?
Probably not.
The player has already earned the reveal, so the sequence has been simplified. Throw all ten switches, release the pressure lock, start the machinery and open the route into Chapter Two.
This short development journal looks at that decision, the scale of the reservoir, the lighting reveal and my long-standing fascination with liminal architecture.
