From homeowners to business owners, people have spent the weekend cleaning up after Friday night's flash flooding.
Poeme, a stationery store, has been in business for 25 years and sits nestled along Michigan Avenue in Hyde Park. Owner Kristen Folzenlogen says the flooding on Friday wasn't the first time they've been impacted.
"It's coming in through the floor and then it started bubbling up like a water fountain," said Folzenlogen.
Folzenlogen shared video of what their basement looked like Friday night.
"There was a small sink downstairs that started bubbling up and over, and then, as the water started to rise, probably got to about 2 inches, and that's when the pipes along the ceiling started to burst and we were taking water from overhead," said Folzenlogen.
She says they dealt with another flood in 2016, but Friday night was different. While they did sustain some damage, she says they were proactive and don't keep any of their projects downstairs.
Nearby businesses in Hyde Park were hit pretty hard.
"Our neighbors, Patty's Popcorn, they just got through with water mitigation about three to four weeks ago from another storm, and they, on Friday night, they took on another 4 feet of water," said Folzenlogen.
Folzenlogen is stepping up to help. She started gathering and taking in supplies like disinfectant wipes and paper towels to help clean up messes left by the flooding. Close to a dozen people brought items in on Sunday, and Folzenlogen says people are welcome to do the same during their normal business hours, which are Tuesday through Sunday.
"Anything you can think of that a small business is going to need. ... We're eventually going to have to be washing display vessels, and, for food service, they're going to have make sure that everything is cleaned properly, if it doesn't have to be replaced," said Folzenlogen.
As Folzenlogen helps others get back on their feet, she says something needs to be done to keep this type of flooding from happening.
"Neko, the sushi restaurant, I know that this is like the third time for them," she said. "This is not the storm of the century; this is a continual problem that needs to be fixed," said Folzenlogen.
The Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati addressed Friday night's flooding, saying the sewer system didn't fail.
"With an event of this magnitude, where we have, again, over 5 inches of rainfall in less than an hour hitting a very isolated portion of the city, there's really no sewer system that can maintain that level of volume, and it's going to be overwhelmed, and we are going to have flash flooding in our streets," said MSD director Diana Christy.
Christy says they've received more than 900 calls regarding the flooding. She says they're in full emergency response mode, working to investigate and respond to all of the sewer backup reports.
Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval shared a statement on social media on Sunday about the flooding. He says the administration and council will fully review what parts of the response operations and infrastructure worked well and what after-actions are needed.
