Built in Nagasaki, Japan, at the Koyagi Plant of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, this massive vessel would go on to become AIDA Cruises’ new flagship, before being officially christened on the River Elbe on May 7th, 2016, during Hamburg’s famous Hafengeburtstag festival.
What makes this story so fascinating is not just the finished ship, but the scale, precision, and ambition behind the build itself. From steel sections and dry dock assembly to the final floating resort, AIDAprima represents the enormous complexity of modern cruise ship construction.
To understand the challenge, you first have to understand the size of the ship.
AIDAprima has an overall length of 300 meters, a beam of 37.6 meters, and a maximum draft of 8 meters.
This is not just a ship. It is essentially a floating city.
On board, AIDAprima was designed to carry around 3,300 passengers and approximately 900 crew members. That means the ship had to be built not only as a seaworthy vessel, but also as a fully functioning hospitality space, entertainment complex, and transportation platform all at once.
It features 18 passenger decks, with a huge range of public spaces, technical areas, accommodation zones, and service infrastructure hidden behind the sleek final appearance.
When you look at a ship like this from the outside, it’s easy to admire the size. But when you think about what has to go inside it—cabins, kitchens, restaurants, pools, ventilation, electrical systems, plumbing, elevators, safety systems, and entertainment venues—you start to appreciate just how astonishing the build process really is.
Constructing a cruise ship like AIDAprima is a feat of coordination.
It begins with enormous pre-fabricated steel sections, often called blocks, which are built separately and then brought together with incredible precision. These giant pieces form the hull, decks, and superstructure.
As the ship begins to take shape, it grows layer by layer into something far more than a marine vessel. Every stage involves multiple trades working together: welders, engineers, electricians, pipefitters, interior specialists, painters, and system installers, all contributing to different parts of the same machine.
And unlike a cargo ship or tanker, a cruise ship demands an extraordinary level of complexity in the interior. It’s not enough for the ship to float and move efficiently. It also has to deliver comfort, entertainment, luxury, and safety for thousands of people at the same time.
That means every square meter matters.
As construction progresses, the ship transforms from exposed steel into a recognizable passenger liner, with open decks, balcony cabins, leisure spaces, and the iconic AIDA look beginning to emerge.
What made AIDAprima especially impressive was the range of features packed into the finished ship.
Guests on board could choose from 15 different dining options, turning the ship into a destination in itself for food and social experiences.
There are also shops, cafés, and bars, along with both indoor and outdoor pools, designed to create a resort-like atmosphere at sea.
One of the standout areas is the AIDA Beach Club. This space is covered by a transparent UV-permeable membrane dome, which allows natural light to pour in while protecting guests from bad weather. The result is a beach-style environment that works even when conditions outside are less than ideal.
That design reflects one of the big ideas behind modern cruising: giving passengers the feeling of open-air leisure, while maintaining comfort and flexibility in all kinds of weather.
Then there’s Four Elements, one of the ship’s major activity zones. It includes the longest indoor water slide on a cruise ship, as well as a rock climbing wall and a lazy river.
This is where the engineering challenge becomes especially clear. These aren’t just attractions dropped onto a ship. They had to be integrated into the vessel’s structure, safety systems, and passenger flow from the ground up.
And at night, the Beach Club transforms again, serving as a discotheque, with stars or laser shows projected onto the dome. So even a single venue aboard AIDAprima had to function as a multi-purpose environment, shifting from daytime relaxation to nighttime entertainment.
