Description
Brad Bird doesn't make movies very often, which makes every new project feel like an event. Over the last three decades, Bird has built one of the most remarkable careers in Hollywood, directing classics like The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Now, after years of false starts and development hurdles, he's finally bringing one of his longest-gestating passion projects to the screen with Ray Gunn, a retro-futuristic sci-fi noir that premieres on Netflix later this year.
During Collider's live panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Steve Weintraub sat down with Bird for a conversation where the two shared in discussing the amazing history of Bird's achievements in cinema. Bird reflected on the advice Disney animation legend Milt Kahl gave him that still shapes every project he tackles, explained why The Iron Giant found its audience years after its theatrical release, shared the surprising way Syndrome emerged as the villain of The Incredibles, and looked back on taking over Ratatouille after Pixar asked him to step in midway through production.
Of course, Ray Gunn was never far from the conversation. Bird opened up about why the movie spent decades waiting for the right opportunity, how he and composer Michael Giacchino developed its emotional and musical identity, and why audiences should expect a world packed with enough visual detail to reward repeat viewings. He also offered updates on Incredibles 3, discussed the passion project he's carried with him for decades, reflected on making the leap to live action with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and teased what could be next after Ray Gunn.
Ray Gunn will premiere on Netflix on December 18.
