🇿🇦✨BRAAI PIE RELOADED✨🇿🇦
We all love a braai pie but this Heritage Day I thought I would try something even fancier! A delicious upside down Braai Pie of your dreams. Here’s how to make it:
Ingredients
• Pre-braaied boerewors (enough to make a spiral)
• 4–5 red onions, sliced
• 2–3 Tbsp butter
• Fresh thyme
• Salt + pepper
• A splash of red wine (optional)
• 3–4 Tbsp chutney
• Grated Parmesan cheese
• Pre-rolled puff pastry
• Egg wash
• Cast iron skillet + baking paper
Method
1. Caramelise onions → Soften onions in butter until golden. Add salt, pepper, thyme, and (optional) wine to deglaze. Cook 5 mins. Stir in chutney. Remove from heat.
2. Assemble tart tatin → Line skillet with baking paper. Sprinkle Parmesan + thyme. Spiral your boerewors on top (leave little gaps). Add extra Parmesan + tuck in caramelised onions. Cover with puff pastry, tuck sides in, seal edges, and brush with egg wash.
3. Bake on the braai → Place skillet in your closed braai (no direct heat underneath). Bake 35–40 mins, until golden and puffed. Or bake in the oven at 180°C for 35 mins.
4. Flip & serve → Carefully flip onto a board, peel away paper, garnish with thyme, slice and wow your guests!
Happy Heritage Day my darlings!
D-I-Braai? Because anybody can! 😉
