“The Hate U Give”
— Similar to our situation today, The Hate U Give focuses on the injustice present in America. As some of you may not be able to endure the pain of the black community, watching this movie will help you understand the importance of using your voice and spreading awareness. This movie is based on a fiction book written by Angie Thomas, in reaction to the shooting of Oscar Grant.
As a minority, I understand the racism present within America and its justice systems. I understand my privileges and I choose to use them to stand with the black community. I understand the impact of my platform, and choose to share information to help more people become aware and further educate people on the matter.
Please, use your voice. You don’t necessarily have to repost everything you see to your story, but spreading valuable information is important and definitely encouraged. Also, keep in mind that ONLY choosing to repost pictures is performative activism. It goes deeper than a repost, it’s signing petitions, donating, starting conversations, educating yourself, protesting, etc. Do what you can.
