Hack happened Thursday Oct 29 US time. Binance's own estimate is $6.3 billion; Chainalysis says $5.9 to $6.4 billion. Previous record was Bybit at $1.5 billion in 2025. At roughly ₹88 per dollar that is about ₹55,000 crore, so say "karib" when you quote it.
Hacker wallets held about $1.5B BTC, $900M ETH, $1.5B USDT, $800M+ USDC. Around $3 billion is frozen so far: Tether froze over $1.5B USDT, Circle over $800M USDC, plus Ripple (RLUSD), First Digital (FDUSD), World Liberty and the Arbitrum Security Council. BTC and ETH cannot be frozen like stablecoins, so that part is likely gone.
Entry point per Binance: a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop that gave access to a service container, which submitted unauthorised withdrawals. Binance says no private key leak. Blockaid's analysis points to an EIP-7702 delegation reprogramming a hot wallet. Final post-mortem is still pending.
Attribution: TRM Labs and Chainalysis say North Korea's TraderTraitor (Lazarus) with "high confidence". Binance and law enforcement have not confirmed, so say "experts ka maanna hai", not "North Korea ne kiya".
User funds: Binance, Yi He and CZ all say user funds are safe and all losses will be covered from the SAFU fund (about $1B in BTC) plus company funds. Updated Proof of Reserves promised after remediation. Binance held roughly $144 to $155 billion in assets, so the loss is about 4% of that.
Withdrawals: paused across the board while Binance rebuilds its withdrawal service, expected back within 48 hours of Thursday night. Deposits are back to normal.
Market: BTC fell about 5% to a six-week low below $77,000 (low around $76,300), ETH down 5.7% near $2,200, BNB down 8% near $690, AAVE down 11%. Roughly $1.4B liquidated, though BTC was already weak before the hack. Fear and Greed dropped to 30. Aave froze V3 and V4 markets after the hacker borrowed about $44M against stolen USDT. Polymarket also had a small unrelated breach the same day (under $3M).
