Director and DP Jamie Brooks breaks down a single take designed to introduce Valentino Guseli’s space, his routine, and the mindset behind his return.
The shot begins inside a dark garage and moves into full daylight, following Val as he grabs his board and heads out. The intention was to establish home as a place of recovery and reset, grounding the story in the everyday moments that shape the bigger journey.
To make the transition work, exposure was set for the exterior, letting the garage fall under while relying on the camera’s dynamic range to hold detail in the shadows. As the camera pushes forward, the image opens up into a balanced frame from dark interior to bright exterior in one continuous move.
The execution came with its own challenges. The move required stepping blindly off a concrete ledge mid-shot, with no resets, while maintaining framing and momentum.
The result is a shot that quietly sets tone and place, capturing a moment where Val is just beginning to return to what he loves.
Volare follows Guseli’s return from a ruptured ACL as he pushes toward Milan-Cortina 2026, competing across halfpipe, slopestyle, and big air. Filmed across Australia, Switzerland, Austria, the United States, and Canada, the 44-minute documentary captures a defining stretch of a young athlete’s career, balancing grit with the kind of moments that keep you out there.
