Behind the Look: THAT SHOT | Good Boy | DP Ben Leonberg

Description

Go behind the look of Good Boy with cinematographer Ben Leonberg.

“When Todd walks down into the basement and off camera, in any other movie we’d follow that human hero. But in this movie, the camera stays with Indy.”

A haunted house film told from a dog’s perspective, Good Boy builds its visual language around a single rule: every frame stays with Indy.

Shot on RED DRAGON-X in 6K, the added resolution allowed for reframing and flexibility when performance couldn’t be controlled. Vintage Nikon glass introduced softness and character, balancing the precision of the sensor.

Lighting guides the eye. Consistent backlight separates Indy from the frame, while reflected “ping” lights in his eyes anchor the audience to his point of view.

Filmed over 400 days across three years, the result is a perspective-driven approach where framing, light, and instinct carry the story.
