Over the years I've lost count, how many times, I've been compelled to hit the keyboard with some urgency, as yet again I'm in the thralls of the Marshall Boxley, Willie Cooper, Joel "DD" Simpson's, Sanders Antwaine Davis' soulfulness. All their San Antonio, Texas work for Abe Epstein is some of the very finest of all male vocal-group harmony recordings, including more than a few, killer Northern Soul cuts.
They lost none of that flamboyant confidence when they left the stewardship of Bernstein, for the comfort of the influential highly gifted Bert DeCoteaux in New York. DeCoteaux beautifully arranges and produces this off the scale masterclass in male group vocal harmony.
This was before the group joined Popside / Riverside Records group. Cutting that massively wanted "It's So Hard to Break the Habit" guided by Robert Bateman & Lou Courtney. "Keep Your Love Strong" was their one and only Atlantic release. Dare we suggest say the scouts at Atlantic missed some extreme talent when they failed to take in "Marshall Boxley, Willie Cooper & team."
Listen, but beware you are likely to be overwhelmed, like me, by distilled & unparalleled soulfulness...
