Ariel Roblin: Why a permanent Daylight Saving Time should finally happen

Description

In 2018, Californians voted to end the twice-yearly clock change by a nearly 60% margin.

Proposition 7 gives state lawmakers the authority to enact permanent Daylight Saving time – but our state has been waiting for changes on the federal level.

Right now, the U.S. Senate is considering a bill that would end the practice of changing our clocks. We would no longer spring forward to Daylight Saving Time in March or fall back to Standard Time in November. The bill would keep the nation on Daylight Saving Time.

The concept of losing an hour, then gaining it back months later, is not popular – and everyone has something to say about it. It started as a way to save energy and maximize daylight, but the disruption to our internal biology far outweighs any benefits in this era.

It's not great for our sleep and ultimately our health.
