"The Word Was God" (1996) by Composer Rosephanye Powell and "John 1" (2025) from Indiana Bible College sound very similar to some, and very different to others. Today I want to examine the two works from a compositional and music theory perspective as we ask: What is the Essence of a Work of Music? This isn't just a thought experiment. This has real world impact on ownership, of legal protection, and fair pay to those who create musical ideas.
