Apple now blocks updating and factory resetting older iPhone models via iTunes,Finder or Apple Devices. As you are unable to restore the filesystem anymore, your older iPhone and Cellular iPad models will be permanently bricked and will not work. This applies to iPhone 5, 4s, iPad 2,3,4 (cellular).
Apple have also blocked updating iOS 5 to iOS 6.1.3, and iOS 6 to iOS 8.4.1 via settings, You CAN still update to iOS 9.3.6 & iOS 10.3.4 via software update (for now).
