This video features hundreds of personal objects mailed to me by my patrons around the globe.
I asked them to send things they wanted to get rid of; I promised to burn everything myself.
People mailed whole wedding gowns, love letters, stripper heels, diplomas, adoption papers, dog tags, family photos, old toys;
there was a child’s single shoe.
Some objects arrived with letters of explanation; some just arrived.
Sometimes it was more heartbreaking not to know.
Death Thing was the closing track on my 2019 album “There Will Be No Intermission”, and it never “got” a music video even though it was one of my favorite songs. It was written in 2017, shortly after I had a difficult miscarriage at three months, and after losing my best friend to cancer, and it was about the uncanny feeling of getting too good at grief. Little did I know what was in store for us all in 2020.
Wherever you are, may you find the strength to burn what needs to be burned; may you march nakedly into the future, phoenix-like.
Hold onto your friends, sometimes they’re the only ones who can carry you out of hell.
