Discover the surprising influences behind iconic video games in this YouTube video. Super Mario Brothers (1985, Famicom/NES), a legendary side-scrolling platformer, drew inspiration from Namco’s Pac-Land (1984). Created by Toru Iwatani of Pac-Man fame, Pac-Land introduced scrolling backgrounds and bonus point mechanics—like jumping to a flagpole in Super Mario—confirmed by Iwatani and others in interviews and The Untold History of Japanese Game Developers. The “Super” in Super Pac-Man (1982) may have also influenced Super Mario Brothers.
Grand Theft Auto (GTA), developed by Rockstar Games, traces its open-world roots to the ZX Spectrum’s Turbo Spirit (1980s). This retro driving game featured large maps, missions, and vehicular chaos—early DNA of GTA—though it’s now considered unplayable due to outdated mechanics.
Street Fighter (1987), the fighting game genre pioneer, evolved from Kung-Fu Master (1984) by Takashi Nishiyama. Inspired by Bruce Lee’s Game of Death (1978), it introduced stage progression and boss fights—concepts foundational to Street Fighter and modern video games. Additional influences include Yie Ar Kung-Fu and Karate Champ.
Hideo Kojima’s Snatcher (1988, MSX) ties to Night Trap (1992, Sega Mega CD), a full-motion video game. Night Trap’s controversy prompted Konami to port Snatcher to Mega CD, blending interactive movie elements. Lastly, Wolfenstein 3D nods to Castle Wolfenstein (1981).
