Most blacksmiths forge mild steel. Some use tool steels. Very few choose stainless steel.
There's a reason for that.
In this project I set out to forge a pair of tongs from 316 stainless steel to find out whether the material's reputation is deserved. What started as a straightforward build quickly became an experiment in heat control, metal movement, and discovering how stainless behaves under the hammer.
Along the way I'll share forging tips, lessons learned, and some surprising facts about stainless steel that most people never hear about.
By the end of the project I had a finished pair of stainless steel tongs—and a result I wasn't expecting.
