Written Steps:
1. When doing the whisper siren (you may know this exercise as vampire breath or whisper slide as it was commandeered and renamed by some of the other Big Transvoice teachers (you know who you are :)), but make no mistake this was my original exercise and as such we will refer to it as the whisper siren) Too much subglottal pressure leads to Engagement of the vestibular folds. FIX: do the whisper siren quietly.
2. Changing enunciation when in female voice, FIX: practice saying the same phrase in your male voice in slow motion, focusing specifically on where the tongue goes to enunciate each vowel and consonant, then switch back to your female voice and see if you can keep the same movements with the tongue in your female voice. NOTE: this is primarily referring to the placement of the tip and arch of the tongue, not the back of the tongue, which should be brought forward for a female voice and then the tip of the tongue should go where it normally does in the male voice.
3. Extreme Depressed tongue root when speaking. Demonstrate knoedel and imitate Kermit the frog. FIX: generally aim to keep the back and middle of the tongue arched up towards the molars (not touching them but right beneath) and the tip of the tongue resting behind the bottom row of teeth. NOTE: A little bit of tongue depression is okay, and may occur naturally especially if you have a condition such as TMJ that compromises ones ability to move and open their jaw freely which can result in tongue retraction.
4. Raising the larynx to shorten the y-axis or vertical plane of the vocal tract but keeping the soft palate raised. Essentially even if you raise your larynx to the highest point it can possibly go to, if you still have your uvula and soft palate raised, then the vocal tract is not as short as we think it may be. FIX: Demonstrate flashlight vocal tract narrowing exercise NOTE: This rule primarily applies to the range of (F3 to G4) beyond that we may need to make adjustments to the positioning of the vellum. Demonstrate belting.
5. Speaking in falsetto. Now it goes without saying that speaking in falsetto/head voice/Mickey mouse voice/M2 is not effective. Even if you speak in falsetto at a lower pitch, the strength needed to make a voice sound natural just won’t be there. This rule excludes inflection, where typically, the use of M2 is warranted and helpful for vocalizing higher notes. FIX: Demonstrate mechanism check.
