Bessy Dressy and Joe James share the birth story of their second child. After having a preemie the first time and undergoing surgery to remove an ovary early in this pregnancy, they were warned the baby might come early again. Bessy describes the anxiety of experiencing Braxton Hicks for the first time, starting at 31 weeks. This led to a significant "false alarm" at 35 weeks, where contractions had them calling the hospital and their parents in the middle of the night, only for everything to stop.
The story picks up on the 16th, at 37 weeks pregnant. Contractions started at 2 AM but remained manageable all day, even as they went on their normal Saturday walk and to the farmer's market. The real labor didn't kick in until that night. While Bessy was putting their son to bed, her water broke with a "pop".
Unlike her first 20-hour labor, the pain became intense immediately. Joe checked her and was shocked to find she was already 6-7 cm dilated. They rushed to the hospital with their son, Lou, in the car. By the time they arrived at the ER, she was 8 cm dilated. Joe describes advocating for their birth plan (Natural, no IV, no epidural), while Bessy labored first on her knees and then on her side. Their son stayed in the room, and the midwife even placed him on the bed, which calmed Bessy down during the most intense moments. Joe caught the baby, and Bessy was surprised to find out it was a girl.
