Free and very cheap modifications for your new dual sport or adventure bike! Or older models too. We are using the AJP PR7 as an example. Most of these modifications will apply to all adventure motorbikes. Those specific to the AJP PR7 are in the second half of the video. Welcome to Cross Training Adventure, we are into all things dual sport and adventure on the east coast of Australia. Must-do mods for new motorbikes and free dual sport tips! Loosen the nuts on the valve stems or remove them completely. If your tyre gradually slips on the wheel rim, you won't notice until the valve stem rips off. If the valve stem starts to lean, you need to fit rim locks or use higher tyre pressures. Valve caps. Buy these which include a valve remover for the AJP PR7. Flat tyre? It might not be a puncture. Setting up your levers and handlebar positioning costs nothing and can greatly increase your comfort. See this video which also covers setup for tall and short riders. Balance your wheels. Road and large adventure motorbikes usually have balanced wheels. Others like the AJP PR7 don't. Lead weights are available cheaply online via Ebay or Amazon. You can balance your wheels while on the motorbike if you remove the brake calipers. But the ideal is to remove the wheels completely. Suspension. Add a few extra tools and you have cheap but quite comprehensive tool kit. I have uploaded the details to the files section of the 'AJP PR7 Australia' group on Facebook. Some owners automatically spend $1000 or more on suspension tuning. We suggest trying the free mods first. If you like dual sport riding in Australia then you might like our adventure riding vids. Adjust the compression and rebound damping. Set the suspension sag correctly. Try a heavier fork oil for the AJP PR7 if more damping is needed. Side stands are often designed to automatically retract for safety reasons. Many experienced riders find this annoying and modify the stand to stay down until manually retracted. On the AJP PR7 this pin for the AJP PR7 is pressed into the stand and can either be removed or use a grinder to cut it. Put electrical tape under your lever mounts. In a crash this allows the clutch and front brake mounts to spin instead of break hopefully. The ideal solution is a quality set of 'full wrap' handguards. Our AJP PR7s already came with decent Polisport handguards but we upgraded to Barkbusters for the extra protection. Electrical wiring. Consider applying dielectic grease on all electrical connectors for the AJP PR7 that might encounter moisture. There is a lot of debate about this and some claim you shouldn't do it. This is especially a good idea if your motorbike has alloy wheel spacers like the PR7. Eventually the rubber seals wear grooves in the spacers which can allow water and dust in. But there is a greater risk of losing it. I suggest using Loctite on the bolt. Do your research. It's designed to protect all those connections! Use some thin wire on your handgrips to prevent moisture getting under the handgrips. It's very annoying when your handgrips for the AJP PR7 start rotating after rain or washing your motorbike! Check your spoke tension. Usually this should be fine on a brand new motorbike, but it's important to check again after a few rides. Spokes can take a while to bed in and some may need tightening after that first few hundred kilometres.Thankfully AJP is not one of those manufacturers. Google around to see if your motorbike could benefit from some extra grease in those areas. The 2025/2026 PR7 has a redesigned bashplate that is only held in by one bolt. It's great for quick removal. Some AJP owners said they needed to apply extra grease where the air box goes into the throttle assembly. Check out our reviews of various adventure bikes and dual sport bikes. And using a zip tie as a backup. If you own a PR7 can also buy stainless steel wheel spacers from OVmoto to avoid the issue for the AJP PR7. However if you search AliExpress for '8 piece motorbike tool kit' or 'universal motorcycle tool kit' you can find very cheap compact kits that will fit under your seat. Our new PR7s appeared to have a decent coat of grease there but it can be worth checking on older models. Extra grease in your wheel bearings. There's a lot of debate about this for the AJP PR7.
