Description
Separated for 10 weeks, Warrington couple Phil and Becky confront fizzy pop addiction, a blood pressure scare, and a half marathon that could rewrite their future.
On Weight For Love, Professor Tanya Byron separates overweight couples so they can break unhealthy patterns without their partner’s influence. IT worker Phil and laundrette assistant Becky admit fizzy pop is their biggest downfall and that every Monday’s diet collapses by Tuesday. With behavioural scientist Paul Dolan and physiologist Rick Shakes Braithwaite, they undergo full health checks, tailored food plans, and mindset work to change for good.
Phil, once 30 stone and post gastric bypass, arrives at 24 stone with dangerously high blood pressure. Rick halts his treadmill test and even benches him during a casual football game, fitting a 24 hour BP monitor and starting a walking plan from 5,000 to 10,000 steps a day. Swapping two litres of fizzy pop for water and sticking to portion control, Phil sheds 13 pounds by week five and over three stone of fat by reunion. Paul then trials a push pull joystick brain training task to retrain Phil’s fast brain away from fizzy drinks; after repeat sessions, Phil is three times more drawn to healthy drinks than fizzy.
Becky eats 1,500 calories a day, tackles Tabata intervals and run walk sessions, and battles low self belief rooted in a tough childhood. With sister Danika’s support and Tanya’s reframing of her self fulfilling prophecy, Becky keeps going. Rick sets a bold half marathon challenge; five weeks later she crosses the line in about three hours, proving to herself she can finish hard things.
After three weeks of no contact and 10 weeks living apart, the couple reunite in front of friends and family. Becky has lost over two stone; Phil has lost over three. They commit to supporting each other’s new habits, keep the weight coming off, and share happy news that they are expecting.
