This Could Have Been Catastrophic... Cirrus SR22 Magneto Failure

Cirrus SR22 Magneto Failure during the engine run-up ended this trip before it even began.

I was preparing to depart Morristown, New Jersey, for Boca Raton when my Cirrus SR22 magneto failure showed up during the run-up. The right magneto was almost completely dead, making the flight unsafe.

Instead of taking off, I shut the airplane down and started looking for an aircraft mechanic. Unfortunately, it was Sunday, icing weather was moving into the area, and I quickly found myself stranded away from home.

This video shows a real-world magneto failure, aircraft maintenance decisions, winter flying, IFR operations, and why every pilot should take a failed run-up seriously. --------------------------------------------------------------------

I am NOT a Certified Flight Instructor and my videos are not for instruction purposes. The video is intended for my own personal experiences and for entertainment purposes only. Do not use my video content as information about how to fly an airplane. To properly learn how to fly you MUST visit your local flight school and work with an experienced Certified Flight Instructor.

FAQs - What airplane is this? This is a Cirrus SR22T (Turbo) Generation 6 (G6) built in December 2018. - Why do you fly so much? I fly for business primarily supporting my clients and staff at meetings and conferences and vendor partner relationship building for my Government Payments platform company called Autoagent - What do you use to record your videos? I use 2 GoPro 10 cameras in 4K mode, I use ND8, ND16 filters on the cameras to filter out the prop and create a cinematic effect, I use a Sony FRD-AX53 4K camera with mechanically stabilized optical zoom, my iPhone 17 PRO MAX for many of the video shots you see when the 4K camera is too bulky to carry. I record audio with a Sony voice recorder and I use a cockpit audio recording cable I bought on Sporty's. - What software do you use to edit your videos? I use Final Cut Pro on a MacBook Pro - Where do you find good royalty free video clips? I use artgrid.io - Do you do all the editing? Yes, all this work other than some filler video clips and music is my work 100% - What oxygen system do you use? I use Precise Flight cannulas and their X3 oxygen conserver regulators with the boom cannula. Works good but the boom could use some better engineering. - Do you promote products? Never! I keep my videos sponsor free and continue have unlimited and unrestricted fun without a "boss" or watching my words. - You fly so good don't you make mistakes? I make tons of errors which I will never show you lol. But that's how you learn. Every flight is a lesson no matter how experienced you are. - Where are you from originally? I was born and raised in beautiful Greece and came to the US as a College student. Loved the Country decided to stay and build my career here. Best decision ever. - How do you afford to own an airplane? Airplane ownership can be expensive but when done right, in the US, it becomes a wonderful tax deduction that can allow you to fly for business almost for free. Get trained well, get a bank loan and buy yourself an airplane for your business. Then depreciate the entire aircraft cost which will reduce your income by the value of the depreciation which will save you on taxes. Put the aircraft on an LLC and save on sales tax. Talk to an aviation tax consultant and they will guide you.
