We're in the thick of summer now, and that includes last month's Nintendo Direct! Which gave us a ton of new game announces, more news about upcoming games, and even a few surprises for the rest of 2026 (and a little beyond).

But as a long time Smash Bros. fan and someone who has created many newcomer concepts for characters who haven't made it in yet, I end up looking at these announcements from an extra perspective. Out of the glimpses we got of these games, which characters stick out as someone who could join the next Smash as newcomers? And what can we figure out about what moves, mechanics, and other unique stuff they'd be able to do as playable fighters?
