Description
Animals at the NEW Zoo are making their way back into their exhibits to start the week. For several days in a row, some were moved inside due to poor air quality across Northeast Wisconsin because of wildfire smoke from Canada and Minnesota.
Last week, the air quality index reached "hazardous," the most severe level. Certain animals are at a higher risk than others.
One example is the Zoo's bald eagle, Sierra. She's estimated to be 27 years old and is therefore at higher risk.
Larger species, like the bison, were at a lower risk.
Trevor Moore, NEW Zoo curator of animals, says 15 species were moved inside. As of Monday afternoon, 12 were back out.
Although many species have returned to their enclosure, some exhibits like the penguins are still empty with the animals inside and out of the air.
Moore added due to what looks like a positive air quality forecast Tuesday, he hopes the animals will all be back out on habitat.
