Description

Allah ﷻ commands us in the Qur'an to honor and be dutiful to our parents—even if they are non-Muslims.

He says:

"But if they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, then do not obey them; but accompany them in this world with appropriate kindness..."
(Surah Luqman 31:15)

SubhanAllah. Even if parents call their child to the gravest sin—shirk—the child is not allowed to obey them in that matter, yet he is still commanded to treat them with kindness, respect, and good companionship.

Now ask yourself:

What about parents who aren't calling you to disbelief... but are encouraging you to pray, seek knowledge, lower your gaze, wear the hijab properly, keep righteous company, or become a better Muslim?

How can someone neglect, disrespect, or become harsh with parents who are sincerely trying to guide them to Paradise?

This powerful reminder calls us to reflect on one of the greatest obligations in Islam: birr al-walidayn (dutifulness to parents). If Allah commands excellence towards parents who may oppose Islam itself, then how much greater should our kindness be towards believing parents who only want what's best for our dunya and our akhirah?

May Allah make us among those who honor our parents, speak to them with gentleness, and earn His pleasure through serving them. Ameen.
