I hadn’t been out sketching in public for almost a year, so opening a sketchbook in the middle of Matlock Bath felt surprisingly intimidating.
I’m glad I did.
I stopped to sketch a beer delivery, then wandered down to the river where the rowing boats and pedalos were being prepared before the tourists arrived. I realised that every busy place has a quiet hour when people are simply getting ready for the day and most of us never notice it.
A photograph captures a single moment. A sketch captures time. As you draw, people move, conversations happen, the light changes, and memories somehow become part of the page.
These days I’m less interested in inventing stories than in discovering the stories that are already happening all around us.
