White’s just released one of the more interesting boots I’ve seen in a while: The Buckin’ Special, built in collaboration with Buckin’ Billy Ray Smith.
This is not just another name-on-the-box boot collab. The Buckin’ Special uses White’s Nail Bottom Construction, which gives it a much closer, cleaner sole profile than the double-row stitchdown build you see on something like a pair of Smokejumpers. That changes the look, but it also changes the feel. These wrap the foot in a tighter, more tucked-in way that feels different from the typical big PNW work boot.
In this video, I walk through the details that make these stand out: the sprung toe, rolled top, oversized eyelets, full-height kilties, hard double celastic toe, four rows of heel counter stitching, and that slimmer nail-bottom profile.
The bigger point is this: these feel authentic. They were built with input from someone who actually uses boots as part of his toolkit, not just someone looking for a product with their name on it.
Are they overbuilt for most people? Probably. But for the right person, that’s exactly the point.
