Caravaggio's painting of Cupid - mischievous, mocking, provocative - was considered so powerful that its first owner, Marchese Vincenzo Giustiniani, hid it behind a green curtain in his gallery.

After showing guests around his huge collection of sculptures and paintings, he would reveal the God of Love as the grand finale.

Find out more from our director, Dr Xavier Bray.

Four centuries have not diminished the impact of Caravaggio's painting.

Come and see it for yourself in our free exhibition, until Sunday 12 April.
