Caravaggio's painting of Cupid - mischievous, mocking, provocative - was considered so powerful that its first owner, Marchese Vincenzo Giustiniani, hid it behind a green curtain in his gallery.
After showing guests around his huge collection of sculptures and paintings, he would reveal the God of Love as the grand finale.
