What Is Going On With South African RETAIL Right Now?

Vusi Thembekwayo Video 1 months ago

Description

South Africa's retail sector is in the middle of one of the most dramatic divergences I've seen in years, and I break it all down in this video.

TFG has lost roughly R24 billion in value over the past year. Woolworths has also taken a hit in the mid-teens. Meanwhile, Boxer and ShopRite are thriving, holding steady or even growing while the rest of the sector bleeds.

I unpack exactly why this is happening: weak discretionary spending, margin pressure, fast fashion disruption, and a consumer that's trading down hard. I also break down the company-specific and macro forces driving the divide, and what it reveals about where South African retail, and consumer behaviour more broadly, is actually headed.

One disclosure: TFG is a client of ours, and I say that upfront because I think transparency matters, especially when the numbers aren't flattering.

The bigger lesson here isn't just about retail. It's about value. If you can deliver something cheaper, better, and faster, you win, no matter what industry you're in.

Tell me what you've noticed at the stores you shop at. Are you seeing this shift too?

See you on the other side. Cheers.
